The Koutiala region of Mali was hit by exceptionally intense torrential rainfall, causing the Bani River to flood and inundate several surrounding villages. Within hours, homes, granaries, latrines, corn and cotton crops, and livestock were swept away, leaving communities in a critical situation.

At the start of the 2025 rainy season, World Vision Mali collaborated with the government's technical services and the Koutiala Regional Directorate of Social Development to  deploy humanitarian assistance in late June, helping over a thousand households affected by this disaster.

More than 1,000 vulnerable households, spread across the municipalities of Konseguela, Diédougou, Konina, Zébala, Nafanga, and Logouana, received direct assistance, in the forms of food baskets worth 48,250 CFA francs per family. The baskets contained a 50 kg bag of rice, 10 kg of cowpeas, four litres of oil, two kilograms of sugar, one kilogram of iodised salt and two bars of soap.

This support came at a crucial time, as we had depleted the donations received during the initial assistance efforts:

"This aid will allow me to feed my children and regain some dignity before the next harvest,' says Mariam, a resident of Touloumina",  said Mariam, a resident of Touloumina.

"Thanks to World Vision and its partners, this aid gives hope to many families who were unable to cultivate or harvest crops last year due to the floods", added the village chief of Filima.

Beyond immediate assistance, the intervention also aimed to help strengthen community resilience through awareness-raising activities on nutrition, hygiene, and sanitation, in order to prevent the spread of disease on the eve of the 2025 rainy season.

Thought this targeted assistance, World Vision Mali reaffirms its commitment to the most vulnerable populations and its support to the Malian government in addressing the effects of climate change and natural disasters.
