“Growing up in a safe and nurturing environment, where relationships are harmonious, and values are positive, plays a crucial role in a child’s future and development,” says Lattana Xaypanya, a 43-year-old mother.

World Vision is committed to protecting children from all forms of harm and ensuring they grow up in environments filled with safety, care, and well-being. Through its programs, the organization strengthens positive and peaceful relationships among children, families, and communities, while upholding the rights of every girl and boy.

As part of this effort, World Vision facilitated Training of Trainers (TOT) on the Celebrating Families module for project staff and government partners. Lattana, a staff member from Soukhoumma district, was among the 20 participants who took part in the training.

“In many parts of Laos, traditional norms often limit open communication and shared responsibilities within families,” Lattana explains. “But I can see things beginning to change after the Celebrating Families lessons were introduced. I’m very happy that we now have this module in place.”

For Lattana and the other participants, the training became more than just a workshop—it was a powerful moment of reflection. Together, they revisited the importance of love, trust, and connection within the family. “I learned so much from this program,” she shares. “I have not only shared this knowledge with community members but also applied it in my own family.”

Before attending the training, Lattana had spent time away from her son, Santisouk, leaving him in his father’s care while she worked. Although she made this decision out of necessity, it was never easy.  “I didn’t want my child to feel that I had abandoned him,” she recalls. “As a mother, I was always worried—especially when he got sick. Sometimes, I even had to take him with me to work. It required a lot of patience.”

Through the lessons she learned, Lattana began to reflect deeply on her role as a parent and the importance of her presence in her child’s life. With renewed commitment, she and her family started practicing positive, non-violent parenting and supporting one another in providing consistent love and care. “I now realize how much my child needs my care, protection, and love,” she says.

Today, Lattana and her family are living together, creating a stronger and more supportive home environment. Santisouk, now six years old, has grown into a bright and confident boy who communicates well and gets along with others.

“I believe the knowledge and skills I gained from the training have helped me become more patient and care for my child with greater love and understanding,” Lattana reflects. “We understand each other better now.”

Looking ahead, Lattana hopes that more families can experience a similar transformation.

“I strongly hope this training can be expanded so that more families will have the opportunity to benefit in the future,” she says. “Because when families grow together, children thrive.”
