Born as the first of six children, Joshua Magidu grew up with dreams far bigger than his family’s means. His parents, though hardworking, struggled to provide for their large household. By the time he reached Senior Four, the financial burden became too heavy, forcing him to drop out of school.

“My dream was to study until university, but my family simply couldn’t afford it,” Joshua recalls with quiet longing. “I never gave up hope, though. I always believed I could do something better with my life.”

That spark of hope came alive in 2018 when World Vision identified Joshua as a young person with potential. Recognising his determination, the organisation sponsored him to join a technical school to train as a motorcycle mechanic.

“World Vision saw something in me when I was at my lowest point,” he says. “They paid my tuition, provided starter kits, and gave me a chance to learn a skill that changed my life.”

Joshshua thrived during his training, excelling in a field traditionally dominated by men. His resilience and hard work paid off, and soon after graduation, he opened Jimex Motor Garage and Spare Parts, a business named after his family name, Jimeyi.

“Before I started my garage, I worked in several workshops where I was often chased away or denied payment. It was demoralising,” he remembers. “Now, I am the boss, and I control my destiny.”

Today, Joshua earns a steady income of around UGX 200,000 (approximately 6 USD) per week. His garage has become a trusted hub for motorcycle repair and spare parts, not only sustaining his family but also contributing to the local economy.

But his success is not his alone. Joshua is paying it forward by training young people in motorcycle repair including his own brothers giving them practical skills and a chance at a better life. His garage also hosts interns sponsored by World Vision, turning his personal triumph into a community resource.

“Training others has been a rewarding experience,” he says with pride. “It’s inspiring to see young people gain confidence and respect because of the skills they learn here.”

With his earnings, Joshua has been able to support his family, fund his marriage, and provide for his wife and child. His story is not just about financial stability it is about dignity, hope, and transformation.

“Today, I am not just supporting my family, I am also making a difference in my community,” Joshua reflects. “I am grateful to World Vision for believing in me and equipping me with the skills that changed my life.”

From one young man’s determination, a ripple of opportunity is now spreading across his community proof that with the right support, hope can turn into lasting change.
