“I had lost everything.” How the Transformation Fund enabled Adam to rebuild her life

Adam, aged 46, is a displaced mother from the Bandiagara region. Like many families,Following insecurity in her area, she and her family were displaced from their community, leaving behind her home, her livelihood and all her means of subsistence.

A mother of eight children, six boys and two girls, her life was turned upside down overnight.

“In my village, I made a living from farming. I grew ground nuts, onions and okra. These activities enabled me to provide for my family’s needs: healthcare, clothing and my children’s education. But with the war, I was forced to leave everything behind. Today, I live at the Barbé Plateau displacement camp.”

When she arrived at the site, living conditions were extremely difficult.

“We had nothing. My children and I suffered terribly. We had no decent accommodation, there was a shortage of food, and my children had had to drop out of school. Their health was deteriorating day by day. I could no longer see how I could provide for my family.”

In response to this situation, the Nexus project, through its economic development component, set up S4T (Savings for Transformation) groups to build the resilience of displaced people and host communities by offering them opportunities to save and access credit.

Adam joined one of these groups in the hope of gradually rebuilding her life.

“I became a member of a savings and credit association. Thanks to the savings I’ve made and the loans available through the group, I’ve been able to start a small, fattening business. I buy goats, rear them and, after a few months, sell them on at a profit.” 

This initiative has enabled Adam to regain financial independence and meet her family’s basic needs.

“Today, thanks to the Nexus project and the S4T activities, I can cover the costs of my children’s education, healthcare, food and clothing. They’ve gone back to school, have enough to eat, are well dressed and their health has improved considerably. This gives me hope for the future,” Adam tells us with a smile.

Grateful for the support she has received, Adam sends a message of thanks to the teams who have supported him in this new beginning.

“I would like to express my sincere thanks to World Vision, through the Nexus project, for its support for displaced people. Thanks to this support, we have regained our dignity and hope for a better future. May God bless all those who come to our aid. ”
