Nearly 13,000 children in Monapo district, Nampula province, have received essential school supplies to support the start of the 2026 academic year. The initiative, led by World Vision, seeks to reduce school dropouts associated with the lack of basic financial resources and forms part of the organisation’s broader commitment to promoting literacy and improving pupil retention within the national education system.

The distribution of school supplies is part of a wide range of approaches implemented by World Vision to address school dropout and to promote literacy and numeracy

During a symbolic handover ceremony held in the community of Mugica, 184 pupils received notebooks, pens, and pencils, support which, according to World Vision, is intended to help ensure that more children return to school and remain in class, thereby strengthening learning outcomes.

“It is common to see children who do not resume classes, often citing the lack of school materials. We decided to provide support because, as an organisation, our commitment is to ensure that no child is left behind in the teaching and learning process,” said Arlindo Justino Manuel, Field Coordinator.

Edilson expressed confidence that the notebooks “will allow me (...) becoming a nurse”.

Among the beneficiaries, Celina, a 7th-grade pupil, said the materials were “very welcome and will help a lot”. Edilson, in the 9th grade, expressed confidence that the notebooks “will allow me to take notes, learn, and work towards my dream of becoming a nurse”.

The distribution of school materials was made possible through contributions from sponsors supporting initiatives such as ‘bounce back birthdays’, channel donations to support children particularly the most vulnerable in the communities where the organisation operates.

This intervention is part of a wide range of approaches implemented by World Vision to address school dropout and to promote literacy and numeracy. As part of these efforts, the organisation also is also delivering a school meal project ‘Partnering for Sustainable Education Outcomes’ in the districts of Monapo and Meconta in Nampula province, and in Milange, Zambezia province
