What happens when a child who receives support grows up and returns to serve others? We spoke with Sam, a former World Vision-sponsored child and now an Engineer with World Vision Rwanda, about his journey and why he chose to give back to the organization that once supported him.

1. Can you describe your life before World Vision supported your education?

When I was young, I had a recurring headache problem that affected my studies. My family had no health insurance and could not afford treatment. Through World Vision’s support, I was referred to one of the best hospitals in Kigali, where my treatment was fully covered.

2. How did you first connect with World Vision, and what support did you receive?

I was connected through a community volunteer, Mukagatsinzi. I received school materials, hygiene items, shelter support, and gifts from my sponsor. Some of those items are still with me today as a reminder of that support.

3. What changed in your life because of that support?

The support made me feel valued and cared for. It gave me confidence and hope, and I experienced a sense of love beyond my immediate family, which encouraged me to dream bigger.

4. What inspired you to pursue engineering, and what challenges did you face?

My passion for solving real-life problems inspired me to study engineering. Growing up, I saw challenges in water supply and sanitation, which pushed me toward Civil and Environmental Engineering.

The journey was challenging. Engineering studies required strong analytical skills, and I faced financial constraints and limited learning resources. Balancing academics with leadership and community work was also difficult.

However, through discipline, mentorship, and family support, I completed my studies and gained valuable internship experience. These challenges strengthened my resilience and commitment to using engineering to improve lives.

5. Why did you choose to return and work with World Vision?

World Vision played a major role in shaping my life. Returning is my way of giving back to the organization that invested in me and helping create similar opportunities for other children.

6. What does this mean to you personally?

It is very meaningful. I have experienced both being supported and now supporting others. It reminds me that investing in children transforms lives, and I am proud to contribute through my engineering work.

When I received the job offer, my former employer offered a higher salary, bonuses, and a master’s scholarship. It was a difficult decision, but after praying and speaking with my parents, I chose World Vision. My former boss understood, even though he was disappointed.

7. What has been your biggest revelation working at World Vision?

I have realized the depth of work behind every impact story. As a beneficiary, I saw results. As staff, I now understand the planning, partnerships, and dedication required.

It has also shown me that true development is about empowering communities toward self-reliance. This has strengthened my appreciation for service and long-term impact.

8. What is your guiding Bible verse and why?

My guiding verse is Philippians 3:12: “Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on…”

It reminds me that life is a journey of growth and purpose. It keeps me humble, focused, and committed to serving others while striving for excellence.
