Sierra Leone joined the world in commemorating World Tuberculosis (TB) Day 2026 under the global theme “Yes! We Can End TB: Led by Countries. Powered by People.” The national event brought together government leaders, health partners, civil society, and community advocates to recommit to ending TB, a disease that continues to impose a heavy toll on health and livelihoods in Sierra Leone and beyond.

At the heart of this year’s commemoration was a powerful demonstration of partnership and innovation: the delivery and handover of new TB mobile service trucks, strategically equipped to support community-level screening, diagnosis, and referral services, especially in hard-to-reach districts across the country.

These vehicles were procured and donated through the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GC7) programme, implemented in collaboration with the Government of Sierra Leone and supported by World Vision International Sierra Leone. As Principal Recipient alongside the Ministry of Health, World Vision has been instrumental in getting critical health commodities, resources, and logistical support, like these TB trucks, to where they are needed most.

Driving Diagnosis and Care Closer to Communities

TB remains one of the major public health challenges in Sierra Leone, where undiagnosed and untreated cases still hinder progress toward national targets. The new mobile TB units will expand access to testing in rural communities, urban settlements, and among populations with limited transport options, bringing services one step closer to everyday people.

Equipped for sample collection, rapid testing referral, and community outreach, these trucks will support the Ministry of Health’s ongoing push to increase early diagnosis and linkage to treatment, a critical intervention that strengthens the country’s TB response under the GC7 goals.

A Call to Action: Leadership, Unity, and Commitment

In his address to the national gathering, the National Director of World Vision International Sierra Leone, Alex Whitney, delivered a resounding message of partnership, urgency, and resolve:

"These trucks are more than vehicles — they are lifelines on wheels. They represent our shared commitment to reach every community, leave no one behind, and ensure that a diagnosis leads swiftly to care. Together — government, partners, and communities — we can turn the tide against TB in Sierra Leone.”

This sentiment echoes the global call for strong country ownership and community power that frames World TB Day 2026, urging sustained investment, innovation, and coordinated action to eliminate TB as a public health threat.

Towards Stronger Health Systems and Sustainable Impact

The deployment of TB service trucks complements broader investments under the Global Fund GC7 grant, a US$26+ million initiative that is strengthening health systems, supporting community health workers, expanding diagnostics, and integrating HIV, TB, and malaria services nationwide.

As Sierra Leone continues to scale up access to life-saving prevention, testing, and treatment services, this year’s World TB Day offers renewed hope and tangible progress toward a future free of TB.
