Thousands of Ukrainians have faced unimaginable challenges after the Kakhovka Dam destruction. World Vision’s implementing partner Save Ukraine responded quickly to help the most vulnerable. With the support, Ukrainians have found the strength to rebuild and move on.

“After the flood, the ceiling of our house collapsed, the walls fell down, debris was everywhere, damaged furniture, and dirty clothes. We can't even drink water from the wells, because they are also contaminated,” shares Olena Cherkesova, a 53-year-old woman, whose family was affected during the Kakhovka Dam destruction.

In the wake of the devastating disaster at the Kakhovskaya Hydroelectric Power Plant, families in the Kherson Region faced unprecedented challenges as their homes and livelihoods were destroyed by the flooding.

"
The lives of Olena and family took an even harder turn when the flooding happened, losing everything they have while still enduring the impact of the war.

The life of Cherkesova Olena, a 53-year-old mother of three and grandmother of three took an unexpected turn due to the catastrophe. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of World Vision, through its Small Grants Mechaanism, and Save Ukraine, Olena's situation is gradually changing from despair to hope.

The project focused on humanitarian assistance for families affected by the disaster, providing relief essentials and support to those grappling with the aftermath. It extended a helping hand to families who lost their homes and possessions in the flood, including food and hygiene materials.

For Olena and her family, the assistance became a lifeline. The water purification tablets allowed them to access clean drinking water, while the hygiene materials restored their sense of dignity.

Essential sleeping items, including blankets, sleeping bags, and pillows, and the supply of food, were a source of comfort for a family who lost almost everything.

After the flood, the ceiling of our house collapsed, the walls fell down, debris was everywhere, damaged furniture, and dirty clothes.

The power banks provided allowed Olena's children to recharge their electronic devices, fostering connectivity and communication during an otherwise isolating time. This was particularly important for the children, keeping them connected and informed.

Reflecting on the loss, Olena was heartbroken for her supply of diapers intended for her disabled child, and her flooded garden with a hundred varieties of fruit trees, grapes, and flowers. The Kakhovka Dam explosion stripped Olena of everything she held dear.

The ruins of what was once her home is a constant reminder to Olena of the disaster. Recalling the harrowing events, Olena's mother's tears bear witness to the anguish they endured when their home was submerged under three meters of water.

The disaster unfolded gradually and rapidly escalated into a catastrophe. Olena's first priority was the safety of her family, whisking them away to safety. Currently finding refuge with friends, the Cherkesova family faces an uncertain future.

The waters have receded but the monumental task of rebuilding their lives remains. Cleaning up the debris left in the aftermath requires longer period and time to clear their yard and dispose of the wreckage.

“My family and I are very grateful to World Vision and Save Ukraine. Now the most difficult question is how and where to live with children in the following years?" says Olena.

The same question looms large among the families, how to move forward and rebuild in the years to come. For a family who lost almost everything they built, the support offered by World Vision and Save Ukraine gave them hope to persevere.

Olena's story exemplifies the resilience of the Ukrainian spirit in the face of overwhelming adversity. Through collaboration, compassion, and concerted efforts, organizations like World Vision and Save Ukraine continue to make a tangible difference in the lives of families affected by disasters, helping them rebuild, recover, and reimagine a future filled with hope.
