Unlock Literacy approach transforms learning to read Unlock Literacy (UL) is an educational program developed by World Vision to improve reading skills from primary school.

It aims to make education more inclusive and to create a supportive reading environment, both at school and within communities.

To achieve this, the approach combines several actions: teacher training, the creation of reading clubs, and active parental involvement in monitoring learning.

Before the implementation of the UL approach, teaching reading and writing faced many challenges. Teachers lacked structured teaching tools, appropriate methods, and coherent strategies to effectively support children in acquiring fundamental skills.

This situation limited students' progress and weakened the quality of learning. A gradual transformation.

A gradual transformation followed thanks to Unlock Literacy.

The introduction of the UL approach marked a significant turning point. Teachers received comprehensive training based on five key literacy skills. They now have at their disposal: structured reading methods, suitable teaching resources, practical activities to use in class and in reading clubs.

These new tools have improved the quality of learning environments and strengthened educators' capacities. A real change is happening in reading education for Michel.

Michel, a first-grade student, is one of the many beneficiaries of this transformation. His testimony perfectly illustrates the observed progress: "The way our teacher teaches us letters has allowed me to start writing words. At the beginning of the year, I had trouble writing well, but now I can write my name. I understand.’’

Thanks to activities suited to his level and a more participatory teaching method, Michel is now progressing with confidence. Unlock Literacy provides lasting support for teachers. For teachers as well, the Unlock Literacy approach has been pivotal.

Abdoulaye, a teacher who benefited from the training, shares:
"Thanks to the Unlock Literacy approach developed by World Vision, we received comprehensive training focused on five key skills. This has strengthened our teaching abilities and improved the quality of learning environments. We are already seeing a noticeable improvement in children's reading and writing skills."

These trainings have enabled teachers to adopt more effective practices while strengthening their commitment to promoting literacy at the community level.
