We are World Vision: Reaching out to each other across borders
What does it take to be a World Vision, especially working in fragile contexts like South Sudan, Sudan, and Ethiopia? World Vision South Sudan Country Director Mesfin Loha reflects on our faith and calling to serve the world’s most vulnerable in South Sudan, and on the strength of our oneness as we reach out to one another across borders.
Every May, World Vision celebrates "We Are World Vision" month, a time that fosters oneness — a sense of unity that embeds the World Vision way in all that we do and in every part of the World Vision Partnership. This month is also an opportunity to renew our commitment to working with children, families, and communities, helping them reach their full potential by addressing the root causes of poverty and injustice.
May is #WorldVision month—a time to honor our oneness & shared purpose. This month, I’ve seen our teams in #SouthSudan, #Sudan & #Ethiopia live that out: crossing borders, supporting displaced staff, delivering aid in crisis. That is unity & faith in action without borders.
I have been reflecting on the engagements our team in South Sudan has had over the past few weeks with our colleagues in Sudan and Ethiopia. One major success we achieved is the strong collaboration and working arrangements we established to support our team in Sudan and access the southwestern parts of the country through South Sudan.
Our teams from Sudan were able to conduct assessments and deliver supplies and equipment that are essential for program implementation. Given the current political and operational context, the collaboration between our two offices will be invaluable in achieving program goals, encouraging front-line staff, and building confidence with donors and other partners.
The recent conflict in the Upper Nile state of South Sudan has predominantly affected Ulang and Nasir counties. Due to intensified fighting, some members of World Vision South Sudan sought refuge in the Gambela region of western Ethiopia. Our colleagues from World Vision Ethiopia made a four to five-hour journey to check on the South Sudan team and provide necessary support. This reflects the collaboration of three offices in a conflict-prone area, where the impact extends across borders.
Witnessing such unity in action and the willingness to reach out to one another is truly heartwarming. No matter where we are or the challenges we face, We Are World Vision. We remain committed to reaching out to the most vulnerable, united in our promise, living out our Christian faith, and serving with boldness and humility.
