Village Health Volunteers: making a difference in Solomon Islands

Tuesday, September 12, 2017

Meet Ruth, a World Vision Solomon Islands' Village Health Volunteer.

Ruth is a community member who has volunteered to be part of the Solomon Islands Maternal, Newborn, Child Health & Nutrition program.

Ruth lives in the Central Islands of Solomon Islands where she is working to improve the health of pregnant women, mothers, newborns and children under the age of five.

As a Village Health Volunteer Ruth has dedicated her time and energy towards helping those in her community, particularly mothers and infants.

It was Ruth’s passion to learn new things that propelled her into becoming a Village Health Volunteer.

This includes practicing what she’s learnt in her training, in her own home with her three children.

Ruth says being a community member makes it easier to connect with women and give advice on health matters.

“I always accompany mothers when they visit the clinic for antenatal care, immunisations and to weighing their babies.

“I can see children in the community are growing healthy and it’s evident that families are applying what they learn.”
