For years, Alex Alinga, a farmer from Apenaony village in Uganda’s Kole District, struggled with declining crop yields and poor health due to deforestation and harmful farming practices. Like many in his community, he unknowingly contributed to environmental degradation by cutting down indigenous trees, which led to soil infertility, harsh microclimates, and smoke-related health issues. In August 2024, World Vision introduced Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR), a sustainable method of restoring tree cover and soil health. Through training, Alex learned to protect tree stumps, nurture regrowth, and appreciate the medicinal and ecological value of indigenous species.
