“I want to be in the ninth grade” gets thumbs up for countering school drop out
Initiated in 2008, the “I want to be in the 9th grade” project aimed to offer disadvantaged children from rural areas the opportunity of finding a “sponsor” that would offer financial support and help them continue their high school studies in the city.
The scholarships are crucial in a country where only one in four children in rural Romania attends high school.
The project won the Silver Award in 2008 and this year’s Special Award are two encouraging signs of recognition from the Romanian PR community for the professional way in which both World Vision Romania and The Practice have joined efforts to give children in rural areas access to high school education.
The 355 children students not only receive financial support, covering transportation costs, books, clothes etc. but they are also offered the chance of being part of a group, of doing things together, getting to know each other and even giving back to their communities by volunteering in different activities such as clown shows and summer activities for younger children.
“We want to thank World Vision Romania for giving us the opportunity of being involved in such an amazing project and also for trusting our ideas. This award makes us even happier since we poured our souls into this project”, said Gabriela Lungu, managing partner for The Practice agency.
