Five families will move into new furnished homes, donated by the Saturn Foundation, before next Easter, and four children will receive scholarships to study for the next four years. The foundation will also build a bathroom inside the home of a child with a disability to give the child greater independence.

“What a huge joy it was to hear that we will have, at last, a house. I didn’t expect such a gift. Every evening I knelt in front of God asking for a roof for my five children and hoping for a miracle…Now, I pray for the health of all the people who have helped us”, said Maria Parnic, a mother from a small village who is raising her children on her own.

Every evening I knelt in front of God asking for a roof for my five children and hoping for a miracle… Funds donated by the city mayor and chief of the county council will go towards the rehabiliation of the Viisoara kindergarten roof, windows, heating system and toilet facilities, which according to the kindergarten manager, Gigi Grasu, are currently being used by other community members. The planned improvements will give the 75 children that attend the kindergarten a much more conducive and comfortable learning environment.

Food and wood for heating will also be given to 20 vulnerable families in time for Christmas so that children can celebrate, perhaps for the first time, a warm and comfortable festive season.

“Romanians care about people around them, even in this troubled time, when everybody feels the effects of the global financial crisis”, said Ivona Cojocaru, World Vision Romania Financial Director.

It is predicated that in 2009 the number of unemployed people in Romania will double and 1.2 million people will be jobless. The textile industry, construction, agriculture, car manufacturers and banks will be the most affected.

The sizeable donations by businessmen and local authorities after watching short movies showing the daily reality for many children has instilled confidence in World Vision staff.

“It is wonderful to see that Romanians are really wanting to help the children in the villages around Constanta - the generosity of the guests of the Vega Charity Ball has been encouraging to our Area Development Programme team”, said Anita Delhaas, World Vision Romania National Director.

To receive a monthly scholarship for the next four years is an unexpected gift for me. I want to pay for chess lessons and to reserve money to finish school and go to university. “To receive a monthly scholarship for the next four years is an unexpected gift for me. I need this money to pay for intensive maths coaching as I want to attend a good high school in Constanta city and I must be prepared. Also, I want to pay for chess lessons and to reserve money to finish school and go to university”, said Valentin, an eight grade student who learnt to play chess in just one year and who has already won some significant chess competitions.

For the second consecutive year famous Romanian actress Daniela Nane helped promote World Vision’s work during the event by introducing the artists and conducting the auction to raise funds.
