More than a camp – students learn valuable life skills

Thirty students from World Vision’s Valcea Area Development Programme (ADP) participated in various recreational activities at the Black Sea, as well as information sessions on various topics such as: the ability to say no, effects of tobacco and alcohol, sexually transmitted diseases and conflict management, etc, during the camp.

"For me the camp was a unique experience. I have never seen the sea before. Also I made many friends and through activities that I attended I learned many useful and necessary things for young people in everyday life", said Maria Madalina, a participant at the summer camp.

"We organised this camp in order to stimulate and motivate the children in our communities. Most children in rural areas, for financial reasons, have never left home nor have seen the sea. I believe that these children deserve such a camp. Also holiday activities have an educational role and also a recreational role stimulating creative abilities. So during the entire camp we carried out different themed activities designed to help thesse youth in the future", said Mina Popescu.

At the end of camp children were awarded by representatives of World Vision, with backpacks, shirts, caps and diplomas.

Almost at the same time, 150 World Vision beneficiaries from Dolj ADP participated in a different camp called “The Life Camp”; this time at the mountain resort Straja.

I made many friends and through activities that I attended I learned many useful and necessary things for young people in everyday life

“The LIFE Camp–a New Horizons Foundation programme–uses adventure activities (climbing, rope climbing at high and low altitude, mountain routes, etc) to influence young people’s attitudes and skills in order to develop moral values, such as solidarity, compassion and trust.

For children, the camp was a very challenging experience. “Every day brought something new. I felt joy, curiosity, trust, friendship, emotions and finally…fulfillment”, said Cosmin fromScaiesti village, Dolj County.

Through the low altitude roping course they strengthened values such as trust and team work and during the high altitude roping course they learned the importance of taking risks, as well as the importance of other people’s support,. The children also took part in ecology and touristic orientation courses, through which they learnt more about respect and assuming responsibility for one’s surroundings.

“I liked being in the camp very much because I learned a lot of things: to defeat my fears, to be more courageous, to trust myself and the people around me more. Now I know how important it is to respect people, nature and things,” said Loredana A. from Carpen village, Dolj County.

Also 46 students from grades nine to twelve, beneficiaries of the project “Scholarships, equal opportunities for children in Valcea ADP”, participated in the “Summer School” Camp, where the highlights were mountain activities such as climbing, hiking and team activities, conducted under the guidance of trained instructors.

“The mountain teaches us valuable and unique lessons about being brave and overcoming fears and uncertainties. Summer school was a great opportunity for the teens from the scholarship project to learn new things about themselves, to be brave, to work together as a team and connect with each other with respect for the beautiful environment. They had a great learning and life experience-unforgettable for each of them”, said Vega Ioana, Psychologist for the Scholarships, equal opportunities for children in Valcea ADP project.

“For me, this camp was an unforgettable experience. I say this because I have never been to a mountain or in a camp until now. By taking part in these activities, I discovered my ability to strive, I became more courageous and I made a lot of friends”, said Ionela.

At the end, students enjoyed a campfire, and some of them were rewarded with caps and backpacks.

World Vision Romania plans to give more rural children, with good results at school, the opportunity to participate in these recreational camps as a way to motivate them and their peers.
