Romanian scholarship students collect 2,500 books for village library
“We wanted to take this opportunity to do a nice gesture for children in Vladeni. Every child should be encouraged to read and to enjoy it. This is often hard in villages that can’t afford to have that many books in their public libraries. We also wanted to offer the scholarship students the opportunity to get involved and do something for those who couldn’t be involved in the scholarship programme. We had amazing experiences while working with them before and we felt encouraged to do it again”, said Ana Maria Tabara, project coordinator for World Vision Romania.
The 2,500 books that were collected through the campaigned were officially donated to the public library in Vladeni commune – visited regularly by some 1,200 children.
I think that anyone that has a book at home that he or she has read should be able to give it to someone else – to put a smile on a child’s face. “Our commune has had serious financial problems since 2008 when all our funds were blocked. Unfortunately, this also means that we have no budget for the public library this year – no money for activities or for new books. This makes me very sad – how do I explain to my readers that come in searching for new books to read?” said Ms.Viorica Scutaru, the village librarian.
“I was very excited to get involved in this project – it was a wonderful idea to have this campaign and it wasn’t that difficult to do. I think that anyone that has a book at home that he or she has read should be able to give it to someone else – to put a smile on a child’s face”, said 17-year-old Simona, one of the beneficiaries of the scholarship project run by World Vision Romania since 2002.
