Increasing the level of financing for education worldwide is this year’s main campaign theme. Concerned with the realities of the Romanian educational system, World Vision Romania also launched an online petition* addressed to President Basescu, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and to the Prime Minister.

“Our hope is that as many Romanians as possible across the country, concerned with the many issues and problems that are affecting children’s education will sign the petition. The petition is asking our president and relevant ministries to allocate more financial resources for all children in Romania so that they can have access to relevant education even in the current economical context. Also, as a new member state of the European Union, Romania needs to increase its contribution to fund and support education in developing countries, as a basis for sustainable development ”, said Ms.Daniela Buzducea, Advocacy Director for World Vision Romania.

As a result of low financing and social difficulties, only one in four students from rural areas has the opportunity to continue their high school education The highest sum allocated by the Romanian government in the last ten years barely reached 6% of the national gross income (in 2007), while campaigners strongly suggest a minimum of 20%.

As a result of low financing and social difficulties, only one in four students from rural areas has the opportunity to continue their high school education.

In 2010, the Global Campaign for Education is linked to the FIFA Football World Cup, organised for the first time on the African Continent. Personalities such as Mr. Sepp Blatter, President of the International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA), football players like Zinedine Zidane, Michael Owen or politicians like Hilary Clinton, Gordon Brown or Queen Rania of Jordan and celebrities such as Shakira, Kevin Spacey, Melanie C and many others chose to publicly support the campaign.

Although education is a basic human right, about 72 million children worldwide don’t go to school and 774 million adults can’t read or write – most of them being girls and women.

Early figures show that more than four million people worldwide attended the 1Goal Lessons this year and these numbers continue to grow.

*The petition is posted on World Vision Romania’s web site http://petitie.worldvision.ro and is also currently being circulated in schools around the country.
