Faith and Sustainability: Unlocking Spiritual Resources for Environmental Sustainability and Climate Action in Lesotho
Maseru, Lesotho — “Our faith communities hold the power to turn environmental concern into climate action,” says Mohau Moeketsi, Project Lead for the Faith Partnerships for Environmental Sustainability and Climate Action (ESCA) initiative.
World Vision Lesotho, in partnership with the Christian Council of Lesotho (CCL) and supported by the World Vision Southern Africa Regional Office, will host a landmark learning event titled “Faith and Sustainability: Unlocking Spiritual Resources for Environmental Sustainability and Climate Action in Lesotho” on 04 November 2025 in Maseru, Lesotho. The hybrid event will bring together faith leaders, government representatives, academics, civil society organizations, and climate actors to explore the powerful intersection between spirituality and environmental stewardship.
Empowering Faith Communities for Climate Resilience
Lesotho is among the countries most vulnerable to climate change impacts such as droughts, soil erosion, and water scarcity. Yet, faith remains one of the most influential forces in shaping how communities relate to their environment. The ESCA project, piloted in Pitseng and Senqu Area Programs, has demonstrated that religious values and teachings can inspire tangible climate action and strengthen community-led resilience.
“Faith leaders are not just preachers; they are protectors of creation. When equipped with knowledge and tools, they can mobilize their congregations to adopt sustainable practices and safeguard the future of our children,” said Mohau Moeketsi, Project Lead.
The project introduced the ACCESS Framework, a new model that empowers faith actors to take an active role in climate advocacy and sustainable resource management. This has led to behavioural change at household and community levels — from tree planting to soil conservation and climate-smart agriculture.
Amplifying Voices from the Ground
The event will highlight first-hand stories from community members, faith leaders, and government representatives who have been instrumental in implementing local climate adaptation measures. Partners from the National University of Lesotho (NUL) and Humboldt University of Berlin will share research insights that showcase the long-term potential of faith-based climate interventions.
A Regional Learning Platform
The event will serve as a regional platform for learning, drawing participation from World Vision offices and faith-based partners across Southern Africa. Sessions will include keynote presentations, interactive panels, live polls, and inspiring video stories showcasing how faith partnerships are transforming mindsets and communities.
Key Takeaways:
• Faith communities offer untapped potential for sustainable development.
