World Vision Declares Emergency Response to Catastrophic Landslide in Darfur
PORT SUDAN, SUDAN; September 4, 2025: World Vision is responding with deep concern to a catastrophic landslide that has reportedly swept through the remote village of Tarazin in the Marra Mountains of Darfur. Triggered by weeks of heavy rainfall and unstable terrain, the disaster is estimated to have killed hundreds of people and destroyed homes and farmlands. Ongoing conflict and limited infrastructure are severely hampering rescue efforts.
World Vision has activated an emergency response to mobilise resources in response to the tragedy. While World Vision does not have a direct presence in Tarazin, its team in Nyala, South Darfur, is coordinating with other humanitarian partners to assess needs and mobilise support.
"This is a tragedy of unimaginable scale. Our hearts are broken for the families who have lost everything," said Simon Mane, National Director for World Vision Sudan. "With hundreds of lives lost and communities shattered, we are racing against time and immense challenges to reach the most vulnerable. We cannot do this alone. We urgently appeal to our partners and the global community to stand with us and help us save lives now."
The landslide compounds a deepening humanitarian crisis in Sudan, a nation already in the grip of a crisis where 30 million people are in need. Prolonged rains, widespread displacement and a cholera outbreak exacerbate the situation. The affected region faces extreme challenges, including minimal infrastructure and high security risks. Beyond the mass casualties and buried homes, survivors from neighboring areas are fleeing in fear of further landslides, adding to the displacement crisis. The immediate humanitarian needs are urgent, including shelter and non-food items, food security, health and nutrition, WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene), protection, and psychosocial support.
World Vision Sudan is appealing to partners for support in funding its emergency response. 'We are appealing for support to urgently raise $500,000 for immediate relief for an estimated 5,000 people," added Mane. “We are also advocating for donor prioritisation for Sudan at both regional and global levels, activating emergency protocols for additional funding, and asking for prayers for the children and their families affected by this tragedy.”
