At 6 a.m., while the village of Kakombo still sleeps, Jina Mujinga rekindles the fire in the kitchen of the local primary school. With her apron tied and a cooking pot in hand, she begins her daily routine. For nearly two years, she has been preparing hot meals for all the students, including three of her children, under the school feeding programme implemented by the World Food Programme, in partnership with World Vision and funded by the European Union.

A mother of nine, Jina is more than just a cook: she is the cornerstone of the programme in Kakombo. A farmer by trade, she divides her time between her fields, her home, and the school kitchen, always with a warm smile and remarkable calm.

“When I was little, I dreamed of helping others, of being useful to my community. Today, I live that dream every day, in the smoke and joy of well-fed children,” she says, beaming as she stirs the porridge.

A Life of Many Roles

In the village, everyone knows her as “Mama Kakombo.” Her daily schedule is impressive: mornings at the school, afternoons in the fields, and evenings with her family. She never complains.

“It’s true it’s a lot, but I do it with love. These are our children, our future. If they eat well, they can learn better,” she says, keeping an eye on the beans cooking over the fire.

Her husband, Justin Muyanga, describes her with admiration as “tireless, always smiling, always ready.” Their children are proud of her. The meals served at school help them focus and learn with energy.

A Programme that Brings Transformation

In the village of Masuika, in the health zone of the same name, the school feeding programme goes far beyond just serving meals. It restores hope to children while also honoring the dedication of volunteers like Jina.

“Before, many children came to school hungry. Some couldn’t make it to noon. Now, they eat, they play, they participate,”observes a teacher at the school.

The results are clear: higher attendance, better academic performance, and fewer dropouts. And behind every plate is Jina’s quiet but vital presence.

A Symbol of Silent Commitment

Jina Mujinga embodies the spirit of this programme in Kakombo. Through her perseverance and love, she proves that meaningful change can come from simple, heartfelt actions.

“I didn’t go far in school, but today I know I’m building something great. I’m proud to serve,” she says with pride.

Every day in Kakombo begins around her kitchen, in the warmth of the fire and the aroma of shared meals. Thanks to her, the fight against hunger and for education comes to life.
