For Qondile Dlamini, a social science graduate, life took an unexpected turn in 2024. After years of searching for permanent employment, she relocated from Moneni to a rural community under the Nyakatfo Area Programme(AP) following her marriage through Swazi customwhile seven months pregnant.

Far from home and without a support system, Qondile struggled to adjust. With no female figure to guide her through pregnancy and motherhood, she became isolated and uncertain about the future. As the pressure mounted, she fell into depression and began to withdraw, seeing no reason to attend hospital check-ups, stemming from her negative experience with the hospitality given in hospital.

It was during this time that Fakazile Stewart, a Rural Health Motivator (RHM), entered her life. Through simple conversations, Fakazile took time to understand Qondile’s situation and quickly identified the risks. She emphasised the importance of antenatal care, explaining that regular check ups were essential to monitor both the mother’s health and the baby’s development.

Although Qondile was initially hesitant due to concerns about negative experiences at hospitals, Fakazile continued to encourage and support her, eventually referring her to appropriate health services. Qondile attended her check ups, where she learned that her baby was developing normallybringing her much needed reassurance.

Fakazile remained a constant source of support even after childbirth. As a first time mother, Qondile struggled with breastfeeding. She expressed how painful it initially was, milk did not come easily, leading to sores in the first month due to the baby struggling to obtain milk from the breast. With guidance and encouragement, Fakazile emphasised the importance of exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, explaining its role in strengthening the baby’s immunity and ensuring nutrition. She also advised Qondile on maintaining a balanced diet to support milk production and regularly checked in on her progress.

Despite the challenges, Qondile persevered. By the second month, breastfeeding became easier. She continued exclusively breastfeeding for six months before introducing other foods as recommended. After such an impactful intervention, Qondile now prioritises clinic visits and understands the importance of consistent healthcare. Reflecting on her journey, she acknowledges that neglecting medical care could have had serious consequences and expresses gratitude for the support that guided her through a vulnerable time.

Beyond health, Qondile also faced ongoing concerns about unemployment. With limited opportunities in her rural community, she struggled to find a sustainable source of income. Recognising this, Fakazile encouraged her to explore starting a small business. Although initially reluctant to consider pig farming, Qondile agreed with support from her husband.

After building a pigsty, she expected to receive one pig but was surprised when she received fourmarking the beginning of a new path toward financial independence.

Today, Qondile carries a renewed sense of purpose. She is committed to raising her child with care and determination and hopes her daughter will grow up strong, resilient and ready to seize every opportunity.
