The assistance provided by World Vision Mozambique to families affected by floods has already reached more than 9,500 people in the districts of Maganja da Costa and Guijá, in Zambézia and Gaza provinces respectively.

In Gaza Province, the response includes the distribution of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) kits, alongside the installation of bladder tanks to ensure access to safe drinking water for approximately 5,000 people hosted at one of the accommodation centres.

Emergency kits pre-positioned in one of the accommodation centers.

“The once‑long queues have disappeared. Today, we see smiling faces and laundry hanging on lines. Women who previously had to fetch water two to three times a day can now access water more easily and prioritise household needs,” said Wonder Mafuta, World Vision Mozambique WASH Sector Leader.

Among the beneficiaries of the newly installed bladder tanks is Dorca, a mother of two, who also received two buckets, one with a tap and another standard bucket, along with hygiene kits for her family during a distribution led by World Vision Mozambique in collaboration with UNICEF.

“This support is very important, and I am deeply grateful. We have been facing enormous challenges in accessing water. Even though we still collect smaller quantities, these buckets, combined with the ones I already have, will help improve our situation,” Dorca said.

In the first week of response, 1,601 WASH kits and 201 blankets have been distributed in Gaza Province, and distributions are expected to continue as World Vision Mozambique consolidates its emergency response.

Food Assistance in Maganja da Costa

Meanwhile, in the district of Maganja da Costa, humanitarian assistance has already benefited 4,273 people through the distribution of food kits consisting of rice, maize flour, beans, vegetable oil, and iodized salt, as well as hygiene items.

“We delivered food kits to 107 families. This marks the beginning of our response following the floods. We believe we will continue to support these families throughout the recovery phase, helping them rebuild their lives,” said Gloria Moio, World Vision Mozambique District Manager for Maganja da Costa.

World Vision Mozambique’s response plans to reach at least 75,000 people, most of them in Gaza and Zambezia provinces, with plans to expand assistance to other regions of the country. The response focuses on shelter, food assistance, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), education, livelihoods, and protection, ensuring that the most vulnerable families receive lifesaving and recovery‑oriented support.
