Thuthuka Davis Support Group using savings groups as a vehicle of change for Orphans and vulnerable children

E5 CAN FEED AN ORPHAN- THUTHUKA DAVIS SUPPORT GROUP

Ngwenyameni- From as little as E5, members of the Thuthuka Davis Support Group were able to accomplish a variety of things, including providing some of the basic needs to underprivileged children in the Ngwenyameni community.

This sounds a little bit farfetched, but Nonhlanhla Magagula, a member of the support group emphasized that each member actually does donate E5 to the Orphans and Vulnerable Children savings bag every time they gather.

“We have a separate savings scheme dedicated to the vulnerable children in the community and each of us donates E5 every time we have a meeting. In the end, we are able to purchase and donate school shoes and dishes (with basic needs) to vulnerable families. This year alone, we were able to donate 22 shirts to underprivileged children.”, Magagula said.

The support group was founded in 2010 and has 25 male and female members who donate E200 each month. After seeing their efforts, World Vision Eswatini provided them with the training they needed to maintain their savings. This included a great deal of knowledge about how to keep financial books in a way that avoids losses.

Magagula expressed her gratitude,” I can pay for my children’s school fees, and many of us can through this support group. This all because of the knowledge World Vision gave us during these trainings, and we are truly grateful for that opportunity”, she said.

Knowledge is power, judging from the number of years this support group has been able to sustain. Families are fed, underprivileged children are also taken care of, and children’s school fees are paid- indeed, World Vision encourages innovation, creativity, and flexibility.

The organization maintains an attitude of learning, reflection, and discovery to grow in understanding and skill.
