Romania faces emergency situation as flooding escalates

Nearly 4,000 people were evacuated from Rast community, Dolj County, earlier this week. The commune is now surrounded by flood water.

World Vision Romania Director, Mrs. Anita Delhaas-van Dijk, has declared a ‘category 1’ emergency situation in Romania. “No sponsorship projects are affected at the moment, but the Craiova ADP is in the highest state of alert since approximately 1, 000 children in our ADP could be affected in the coming days”, stated Delhaas-Van Dijk.

Evacuated people currently in hostels, hospitals and schools, many who can, have preferred to go and live with relatives. Others are living in tents and some with no roof above their heads on the side of the roads.

thirteen counties have been affected by floods, 170 houses are flooded and 120 houses are in danger of collapsing. Approximately 40, 000 hectares of agriculture land, forests and pastures are also flooded World Vision has responded quickly to offer support to flood affected people providing them with food, water, clothing and hygienic kits to contribute to a collaborative effort underway to address their immediate needs.

The Dolj County authorities have requested the Government to provide water and food for 6,000 persons.

Over the coming weeks, if the severity of situation continues, World Vision focuses its relief efforts mainly in areas where it is already active and will support local authorities based on the outcomes of the assessments made by World Vision Romania relief staff.

“After the evacuation of the people in Rast commune, the place is a desolate sight. Over 100 houses have collapsed with more expected to follow over the next days as 700 are inundated with water. It has infiltrated the walls and in some places has risen to more than 1.5 meters high”, said Miss Cristina Toma, World Vision Romania Communications Officer for Dolj area Development Programme.

World Vision was the first NGO to offer support. Over and above the relief effort that took place in Rast, at the present moment canned food, bread and water are being distributed to 800 people in 3 communities. Blankets and clothing have also been delivered.

Cernavoda town in Constanta County is also experiencing floods. World Vision Romania staff working in Cernavoda for the children with special needs project have reported water leakages from the asphalt on the roads. World Vision is intervening with food supplies, water and clothing .

Weather forecasts say that heavy rains are expected over the next two days. Galati, Braila and Constanta counties are at highest risk of being hit by floods before the Romanian Orthodox Easter.
