The project Safe School Environment is an educational component of the joint program of the Government of Switzerland and the United Nations (UN) Disaster Risk Reduction for Sustainable Development in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The goal of the project is to make the 10 schools involved in the project more resistant to possible accidents and catastrophes so that as such they would be a safer place for the learning and life of students and school staff.

Actions in brief

ACTIONS IN BRIEF

  • Support selected schools to convene School Disaster Management Committee  for development of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) school plans.
  • Carry out multi hazard assessment in selected schools  according to municipal/city risk assessment and VISUS assessment findings, with special emphasis on COVID 19 pandemic preparedness and readiness.
  • Support schools to develop DRR plans with special emphasis on COVID 19 pandemic preparedness and readiness; organize DRR training for teachers for emergency preparedness.
  • Provide technical support to teachers in conducting of DRR teaching sessions for children within extra-curricular activities.
  • Implement DRR measures proposed by school DRR plans in selected schools, with special emphasis on COVID 19 pandemic preparedness and readiness; organize school evacuation exercises; organize local public awareness events on disaster resilient schools with special emphasis on COVID 19 pandemic preparedness and readiness.

Project Achievements

  • Established and capacitated school disaster management committees in 10 targeted municipalities
  • Carried out multi hazard assessment and DRR plans developed in 10 selected schools
  • 100 teachers trained for emergency preparedness and 3000 children attended to DRR teaching sessions within extra-curricular activities
  • Evacuation exercises in 10 selected schools conducted
  • Local public awareness events on disaster resilient schools with special emphasis on COVID 19 pandemic preparedness organized in 10 selected municipalities
