TTC 2nd Edition in English

Timed and Targeted Counselling for Health & Nutrition (2nd Edition):

A Comprehensive Training Course for Community Health Workers

In the WHO’s review of global CHW training resources (Tran et al., 2014, PLoS ONE 9(4)),  TTC emerged as one of the most comprehensive curricula available in terms of its range of technical content, and spectrum across the continuum of care. TTC takes a life-cycle approach, training CHWs in supporting pregnancy to two years of age. We believe that providing care on this continuum offers the best opportunity to ensure children are on a path to life-long health. Gaps were identified in this study, including the promotion of early child development, gender-based violence, maternal mental health and others. To address these gaps, World Vision is looking more closely at emerging evidence of what works in family health for CHWs, and the need to strengthen essential newborn care.

World Vision’s TTC 2nd edition offers a comprehensive training course for CHWs, Care groups and volunteers of low to medium literacy, which builds on our experience in 23 countries, and addresses critical gaps such as evidence for early child development2 and perinatal mental health3, newborn care4,5 and care of the HIV exposed infant. ttC-2 includes prioritised care for the most vulnerable cases such as people living with HIV/AIDS, adolescent mothers, single parent families, extreme poverty or chronic health conditions in order to more comprehensively address the health equity gap by prioritising those with the greatest burden of risk, and barriers to health. Taking a more family-centred approach, in ttC-2 CHWs learn practical skills for addressing barriers to health and nutrition, promoting involvement of fathers, and enabling CHWs to identify barriers to health, respond to difficulties such as violence and psychosocial problems and teach parents and caregivers the basic skills for engaging children for early child development from birth.

Since its release this year, TTC 2nd edition components have already been used to strengthen the National CHW curricula for Ghana and Kenya.

ttC 2nd edition and all accompanying materials including data monitoring and supervision tools, job aids and guidance on country adaptation are available below.

TTC Data Collection Manual and Tools

This section is intended to provide an overview of the timed and targeted counselling (ttC) data collection and data utilisation process for project managers; design, monitoring and evaluation (DME) staff; and Ministry of Health (MoH) facility-based staff or District Health Management Teams (DHMT) who are involved in the design of data monitoring systems for ttC.

 TTC Guidelines for Supportive Supervision

The ttC model promotes seven interventions during pregnancy and 11 interventions for the child up to 2 years of age, using an integrated lifecycle approach. ttC is a system of behaviour-change counselling delivered through home visiting by various cadres such as community health workers (CHWs), care group volunteers and/or community health volunteers, collectively referred to as ttC home visitors (ttC-HVs). Implementation of ttC involves these ttC-HVs having repeated interactions with families over a period of time.
