Flash flood devastates Rasuwa and Nuwakot, leaving 162 dead and over 400 missing; World Vision International Nepal readying humanitarian response

World Vision International (WVI) Nepal expresses deep concern over the catastrophic flash flood that struck Rasuwa District and downstream communities on 26 August 2026, causing widespread loss of life and massive destruction of homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods. The flood entered Nepal through the Bhote Koshi River from the Tibetan side of the Nepal-China border in the morning and rapidly moved downstream through the Trishuli River corridor, severely affecting communities in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Chitwan, and other districts.
World Vision International Nepal is preparing an emergency response to support children and families affected by the devastating flash floods. The organisation is closely monitoring the situation, coordinating with government authorities and humanitarian partners, and preparing immediate relief assistance for affected communities.
The flash flood, which entered Nepal through the Bhote Koshi River from the Tibet side, has caused significant loss of life and widespread destruction of homes, infrastructure, markets, and livelihoods across Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and other downstream districts. Search, rescue, and damage assessments remain ongoing as authorities continue to verify the full extent of the disaster.
WVI Nepal is currently preparing emergency support focused on the immediate needs of affected families, including food assistance and emergency shelter kits. Initial planning is underway in coordination with local authorities and relevant stakeholders to determine the scale and locations of support required.

Children are particularly vulnerable during disasters due to displacement, disruption of education, psychosocial distress, family separation, and increased protection risks. World Vision International Nepal is monitoring the evolving situation and advocating for the protection, safety, and wellbeing of affected children and families.
As assessments continue, urgent humanitarian needs are expected to include emergency shelter, food assistance, safe drinking water, hygiene supplies, child protection services, psychosocial support, and restoration of essential community infrastructure. As communities face the devastating impacts of this disaster, World Vision International Nepal stands ready to support response and recovery efforts in coordination with government authorities and humanitarian partners.
