After a historic drought, Somalia now braces for El Niño rains: At least a million people at high risk of flooding
After a brutal and historic drought in 2022, Somalia now braces for the El Niño rains. Forecasts warn that the El Niño rains, expected to start in October and last until October would trigger severe flooding in southern and central Somalia.
On Thursday of last week, Baidoa, the capital city of South West State, south central Somalia was the epicentre of heavy rains that lasted at least 12 hours. The rains that started the evening of Wednesday continued through the night into Thursday morning, causing flash floods in the aftermath, with significant damage to infrastructure.

WASH and Energy Learning Brief
As the Sustainable Development Goals prompt strategy shifts from hand pumps to more robust piped-water systems, there is often a reliance on solar energy for pumping in rural areas. Since pumping water can require significant power demand, World Vision and our partners are evaluating the feasibility of combined WASH and electricity service delivery to leverage economies of scale and shared resources to meet multiple power needs in a cost-effective manner.

In the hope of restoring a better future for Lebanon, World Vision Lebanon is providing retention and catch-up sessions for the most vulnerable children. As Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”. Without quality education, children will face considerable social and functional barriers. They are more likely to suffer adverse health outcomes and less likely to participate in decisions that affect them – threatening their ability to shape a better future for themselves and their societies.
