Second Operating Room at the Dosso Mother-and-Child Center: A Life-Saving Donation

On the occasion of Nigerien National Women's Day, celebrated on May 13, the women staff of World Vision Niger demonstrated a remarkable act of solidarity by donating a significant package of medical equipment to the Dosso Mother and Child Health Center. The donation, intended to make a second operating theatre fully operational, is now significantly improving the quality of care provided to women and newborns across the region.

During a recent visit, Dr. Bacharou Adamou Mamane Sani, an obstetrician-gynecologist and Head of the Postoperative Unit, shared the positive changes that have taken place since the donation.

Having worked at the Mother and Child Health Center for more than three years, Dr. Bacharou is well acquainted with the challenges the facility has faced. Established in 2013 following the transfer of maternity services from the Regional Hospital, the center receives a high number of women requiring specialized obstetric and gynecological care every day.

Before World Vision's intervention, the center had only one functional operating theatre. It had been set up in a converted room to meet the growing dema

nd for surgeries related to obstetric and gynecological conditions.

"On average, we performed emergency surgeries on about ten patients every day, in addition to scheduled procedures. Faced with this workload, we realized the urgent need for a second operating theatre, but we lacked both partners and the necessary equipment," Dr. Bacharou explains.

The challenges were numerous: shortages of qualified health personnel, limited technical and financial partners, and, above all, insufficient medical equipment. Despite the government's efforts, the needs remained significant.

World Vision's support came at a critical moment.

Thanks to the donation from the women staff of World Vision Niger, the second operating theatre was fully equipped. The donated equipment included an operating table, surgical lights, infant warming lamps, cesarean section kits, gynecological surgical kits, an oxygen concentrator, and other essential medical equipment required for a modern operating theatre.

"Running an operating theatre requires considerable resources. World Vision came at exactly the right time and to the right place," says Dr. Bacharou.

Today, the impact is evident. With two fully operational operating theatres, the center can now treat more than 15 patients each day, significantly reducing waiting times for obstetric emergencies.

"The greatest improvement we have seen is the availability of two operating theatres. This allows us to respond more quickly and provide better care for our patients," he adds.

Beyond improving the working conditions of healthcare professionals, the donation has strengthened the quality of healthcare services and helped save more lives.

"These medical devices have greatly improved patient care. They have contributed to reducing maternal and neonatal mortality. With this fully operational theatre, we can act faster and save many lives," the specialist explains.

Dr. Bacharou also praised the quality of the donated equipment, describing it as reliable, user-friendly, and easily accessible to all members of the surgical team.

Despite this important progress, the center's needs remain considerable. The Dosso Mother and Child Health Center hopes to continue expanding its capacity to meet the increasing demand for specialized healthcare in the region. Among its priorities are the construction of a new operating theatre department and an additional inpatient ward.
