Three schools from Buhera Cluster Operational Areas, namely Betera, Vhiriri and Chirozva Primary Schools, recently came together for an Electronic Sports (E-Sports) tournament that brought learning and excitement into the digital space.

A total of 126 learners aged 4 to 8 years took part in the competition, supported by World Vision Germany under the Enhancing Rural Education for Sustainable Development Grant. Some of the games include solving puzzles, memory and numeracy games.

The tournament introduced young children to basic digital skills through fun, interactive games. Along the way, learners-built confidence, improved coordination, and developed early problem-solving skills while also learning how to work together as a team.

“In the beginning of the year we donated laptops to the schools through the grant and I am pleased to see the confidence and excitement amongst the children,” said Nyasha Mukwekwe, World Vision Community Development Worker.

Coach Mutsindikwa, who was trained by Dzidzo, World Vision Zimbabwe’s technical partner, said the journey had been rewarding:

“Today I am very happy because our school came first. It took a lot of practice for the children to master basic computer skills. This initiative is helping bridge the digital gap between rural and urban learners. I would like to thank World Vision Zimbabwe for this support.”

For the learners, the experience was both fun and eye-opening.

“I liked using the computer and playing the games. I want to learn more because it was exciting,” said one of the learners.

After a closely contested competition, Chirozva Primary School emerged as the overall winner, but all the schools walked away with new skills and new confidence.

Beyond the competition, E-sports are opening doors for children in rural communities, helping them take their first steps into a digital future.
