This story explains how communities in northern Bahr El Ghazal, South Sudan, are learning to prepare for floods. With help from the World Vision NAF project, community leaders and children are gaining knowledge about early warning signs and disaster management. The article shows how these efforts help families protect their homes, livestock, and lives from flooding.

Three months have passed since the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on 28 March 2025, yet humanitarian conditions remain critical. Early rains have further deteriorated the living situation for many children and families still residing in makeshift shelters, struggling to rebuild their lives. Access to clean water, sanitation, healthcare, and protection services, particularly for those displaced in Mandalay and Sagaing, remains dire. The earthquake compounds an already dire humanitarian situation where nearly 20 million people already needed humanitarian assistance across the country due to prolonged conflict, recurring natural disasters and economic collapse.

As climate induced disasters get more frequent and intense, proactive and community driven solutions have never been so urgent. Through Anticipatory Action, World Vision has empowered local actors to take preventative measures before disaster strikes.

In 2024, World Vision's Disaster Management reached over 35 million people, including 19 million children.

World Vision Eswatini recently hosted a delegation from World Vision Taiwan, who travelled to the country alongside Taiwanese sponsors to visit communities and see first-hand the impact of the projects they have supported. The visit provided an opportunity for the sponsors to engage directly with beneficiaries and witness the transformation their contributions have made towards improving the lives of the most vulnerable.

What if early warning systems could reach the most remote communities before disaster strikes?

Dr Kyi reflects on how Myanmar’s fight against hunger, amid earthquakes, conflict, and economic crisis seems daunting—but not impossible. Hope can still grow in the midst of crisis. A hunger-free world is possible for the children in Myanmar but that will require a united commitment to peace and resilience, and global solidarity.

Asia-Pacific is the most climate-exposed and disaster-prone region in the world. As many as 65% of children in East Asia are exposed to multiple shocks which are becoming increasingly frequent, especially flooding, drought, saltwater inundation, and climate-related diseases. Children and families living in poverty are particularly vulnerable, bearing the brunt of these recurrent crises and their longterm consequences.
