  • Food security outlook: Most parts of eastern Somali,  Oromia (Guji, Borena, East and West Hararghe) and SNNP (Gedeo) regions will remain in Crisis  levels of food insecurity (IPC Phase 3) through January 2019. 
  • IDPs returning home: As of September 14th, estimated 463,355 people who had been displaced by conflict in Gedeo and Guji zones had voluntarily returned to their homes.
  • Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs): A new wave of violence in Kamashi zone of Benishangul Gumuz has displaced more than 70,000 people into to East Wollega and West Wollega zones of Oromia region. The affected people require immediate food and non-food assistance .
  • Effect of conflict on children’s education: The conflict in Gedeo-Guji and Somali region since mid-April has left at least 102,600 displaced children without access to education. At least 159 schools were closed due to conflict between 2016 and 2018. Schools in host communities have accomodated displaced children and this has led to overcrowding, with one teacher reported for every 100 students.
  • Malaria cases: A total of 104,432 suspected cases of malaria were reported and tested during the third week of September. Of these cases 19,424 were treated.
