For years, families in Chapemba lived with a quiet fear. If sickness struck at night, help was 17 kilometres away. That distance costs lives. Headman Biton Simbeye remembers it well. "People used to suffer in this community," he says. "They walked so many kilometres to reach a clinic. Some lost their lives. Others gave birth along the road." The pain was real and close. A mother in labour, collapsing halfway to help. A sick child arriving too late to be saved. "It was painful for my people," Simbeye says, "and we could not take any more."

In the quiet village of Taif Thiekene in Senegal’s Kaffrine region, seven-year-old Boubacar and his 15-year-old sister Mariama have grown up facing both physical challenges and social barriers.

World Vision Ghana, through World Vision Spain, donated incubators and oxygen concentrators, among other essential life-saving equipment, to the Zabzugu District Hospital, which have become lifelines, providing fragile babies with a fighting chance and preventing infant mortality, especially for babies born prematurely.

At Kabuuka Primary School, the daily struggle for water once defined children’s lives more than learning. Pupils walked two kilometres to fetch unsafe water, leaving them exhausted, frequently ill, and often absent from class. For girls, the lack of water and sanitation was especially harsh during menstruation, leading to missed school days and stigma. Through World Vision Uganda’s intervention, a motorised water system was installed, bringing clean water directly into the school compound and surrounding community. Alongside new latrines and sanitation facilities, this transformed hygiene, dignity, and participation in learning—particularly for adolescent girls.
