World Vision Malawi has handed over two newly constructed school blocks to Kanamwali Primary School in Tchesa community, Traditional Authority Tambala in Dedza district.

The two blocks now replace the makeshift shades that have been in use since 2011 when the school was established, thereby creating a conducive learning environment for children, especially girls.

Speaking during the handover ceremony in Dedza, World Vision Malawi (WVM) Education Programs Technical Manager, Florence Pwele applauded the community for taking an active role in bringing this project to life.

“As a community based organization, WVM values community empowerment. The construction projects being handed over today were identified in line with ADC (Area Development Committee) and VDC (Village Development Committee) plans which were also informed by District Development Plans.

It is therefore encouraging to realize that 25% of the costs in form of sand, bricks, land and man power were a contribution from the community,” said Pwele.

Before the construction of the school blocks, children in Kanamwali area had to trek at least 8 kilometers in search of an education from neighboring villages.

Isaac Chilowa, a 12 year old Standard 7 pupil had this to say: “I have been at Kanamwali School since its launch whilst in Standard 2 and now I am in Standard 7. Before the blocks, school life was really hard; during rains and strong winds, classes would be disrupted and we were sent back home. But thanks to World Vision, that is no longer the case.”

“It is my plea that the community leaders will set up mechanisms to ensure these projects are well managed and sustained for years to come,” said Elias Mkandawire, Director of Public Works in Dedza.

Kanamwali Primary school project consisted of 2 school blocks with 4 classrooms, 1 teacher’s house, 240 desks, 29 teacher chairs and 10 tables, catering to 580 pupils of which 300 are girls.

The handover ceremony was also an opportunity for WVM in Dedza to officially handover other projects implemented in its Financial Year 2018, to a tune of 197 Million Malawi Kwacha.

These included five 7-door girls friendly latrines, 32 boreholes and one irrigation scheme in the Tchesa and Chitundu Area Programs.

All these were made possible, thanks to support from World Vision Korea.
