Lalitpur Water Spout
Young children play with water at Dusahiti, a traditional water spout in Harisiddhi VDC, Lalitpur.
Lalitpur ADP supported the Dusahiti Conservation Committee in renovating this traditional water spout in Harisiddhi VDC in 2007. The spout which was at the verge of drying up now discharges more water today. The water is being used by the local people for drinking and cleaning purposes. With water being scarce in the valley, the locals are happy that don't have to travel far off to fetch water.
Traditional stone water spouts are common in Lalitpur. These are the main sources of water for the poor and hold cultural significance. But they depend on the underground water reservoir and are fed by the surrounding hills and annual rainfall. Of 61 such natural spouts in Kathmandu Valley, ten have already dried up. Lalitpur alone has 39, many of them on the verge of drying up and some already dried up. Ten percent of the population in the Kathmandu Valley rely on stone spouts as their main source of water.
