We met Brisilda from Tirana among 100 children and youth attending the latest camp organised by World Vision Albania.

Although only 17-years-old, she's there not as a child, but as a young adult caring for others. Gentle yet enthusiastic, humble yet strong-willed, Brisilda is always attentive to the children, her face lit up with a sweet smile.

The children listen carefully, follow her instructions, and engage fully in the activities she leads. She blends naturally among them; the only thing that sets her apart is the volunteer T-shirt she wears.

First Steps at Summer Camp

Brisilda's journey with World Vision Albania started when she was just 11-years-old, attending a summer camp. What started as a child’s adventure has grown into a role where she now serves as a volunteer, offering love and care to other children.

“My first camp was a mix of emotions: as beautiful as it was challenging. I remember the joyful moments when we celebrated achievements after all the effort and tiredness during activities. But above all, I was moved by the nights when we gathered and reflected on the day’s events. It was unforgettable, full of learning, fun, and new friends.”

This early experience sparked a love that grew year after year, a desire to care for children, just as World Vision staff had once cared for her. Perhaps unknowingly, it shaped her future.

From participant to volunteer

This summer, Brisilda joined the camp’s volunteer staff, experiencing the camp in a new way.

“Seeing how the staff treated us sparked a desire in me to do the same. Today, I feel proud to be part of World Vision as a volunteer. I feel nostalgic about past experiences, but also great joy that I can now contribute to the children myself.”

Although volunteering is not common for many young people, Brisilda sees it as a chance to gain experience, help others, and build lasting memories and friendships.

Volunteering with and for children builds bridges between generations, equips young people with skills for the future, and plants love for children and the community within them.”

Growing through youth groups

Summer camps are just one part of Brisilda’s involvement with World Vision Albania. She also actively participates in IMPACT youth groups, which she considers a turning point in her life. Through these groups, she has gained confidence, learned to express herself fearlessly, and developed initiative.

“I have learned communication skills, teamwork, organising activities, and time management. I have also learned how to listen and respect others’ opinions. The best part is motivating my peers to be active and realise that even small actions can make a difference.”

Volunteering at the summer camps has empowered Brisilda to feel ready to take on greater responsibilities—whether working on youth projects or volunteering on a larger scale.

A message for young people

Engaging with young people is essential for society’s development, thinks Brisilda. She believes in the potential that the youth have to offer.

“Don’t be afraid to meet new people and enjoy every moment. Start with small actions, because they have a big impact. Don’t wait for someone else to make the change, be the example yourself.”

Dreams for the future

Brisilda’s future is tied to child wellbeing. She dreams of studying psychology and working with children who need psychological support.

“One of the most special things about World Vision is how everyone feels part of a family, and how every voice, regardless of age, is heard and valued. This organisation gives every child the opportunity to learn, grow, and gain unforgettable memories.”

While we're leaving the camp, feeling inspired by her commitment, Brisilda is already running towards the little ones; their eyes filled with joy. It's clear that her care for children comes from the heart. Perhaps it’s because, one day, someone extended a hand to care for her.

Today, Brisilda is returning that love.

Quietly.

Without seeking attention.

With all her heart.
