For generations across many communities in Malawi, farming has long been viewed as an activity reserved for older people. In many households, parents spend most of their time in the fields while children are expected to focus on other responsibilities , often far removed from agricultural work.

That perception is gradually changing through initiatives such as the Impact Plus Clubs supported by World Vision Malawi which are helping young people begin to see farming not only as a way of life, but as a business with real potential to improve livelihoods.

In Thundu Area Programme, Madalitso Impact Plus Club is among those at the forefront of this shift. The club is equipping young people with practical skills in irrigation farming while also reinforcing the importance of staying in school and completing their education.

Eunice, a learner and member of the club says her perspective has changed since joining the group.

"I am now learning irrigation farming so that it can help me and others financially," says Eunice.

She admits that before joining the club, school was not a priority for her, but her mindset has since changed.

"It is a must for us to attend school. If you do not go to school, you are not allowed to be a member of the club," says Eunice.

Within the club, members are not only learning but also putting their skills into practice through small-scale farming activities that contribute to supporting vulnerable people in their community.

Tinyade Harry, one of the club leaders says their activities have evolved over time.

"Previously, we planted trees, and now we are engaged in vegetable farming," says Tinyade.

Another leader, Rhoda Mbuzu, says the club also plays an important role in keeping learners focused on their education.

"We want children to be educated, so we encourage them to stay in school," says Rhoda.

Through Impact Plus Clubs in Thundu Area Programme, World Vision Malawi is equipping young people with practical agricultural skills, knowledge, and opportunities that extend beyond the classroom.

The initiative is helping learners bridge education and livelihood skills, building confidence while enabling them to actively contribute to their households and communities.
