Young Voices Lead the Fight Against Drug Abuse in Buhera
By Leana Padera (Communications Graduate Intern)
In response to the growing challenge of drug and substance abuse among young people, World Vision Zimbabwe recently held a three-day awareness campaign aimed at equipping school-going children with knowledge and life skills to make healthy, informed choices.
The campaign brought together key stakeholders, including the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), health personnel, educators, and community leaders, all united in addressing a problem that is increasingly affecting children’s future.
For many in Buhera, the issue is no longer distant.
“We are targeting drug abuse hotspots in the Buhera Cluster Operational Area because we have seen a worrying increase in school dropouts linked to substance use. There is an urgent need for intervention,” said Tanaka, World Vision Zimbabwe Sponsorship Facilitator.
At the heart of the campaign were the children themselves. Through poems, dramas and shared experiences, learners spoke honestly about the impact of drug abuse on their lives, families, and communities, turning awareness into a powerful peer-to-peer message.
“Today, I want to encourage my peers to stay away from drugs because they destroy our future. We need to make healthy choices, think about our parents’ sacrifices, and consider what our tomorrow will look like,” said a learner from one of the Schools.
Beyond raising awareness, the campaign focused on building practical life skills — helping young people resist peer pressure, make responsible decisions, and stay focused on their goals.
Buhera Cluster Manager, Noah Nyowani, emphasized the long-term vision:
“We hope this campaign will be an eye-opener for young people. But more importantly, it is a starting point. There is still more work to be done to ensure our communities support children to live drug-free lives.”
As conversations continue beyond the campaign, one message remains clear: empowering young people with knowledge, voice, and support is key to building a healthier, safer future.
