Afghanistan Humanitarian Crisis

Protecting Children Through Emergency Relief and Long-Term Development

Afghanistan is facing one of the world's most severe humanitarian crises, leaving millions of children and families in urgent need of support. Decades of conflict, widespread displacement, economic instability, climate change, drought, and the lasting impacts of COVID-19 have created a devastating environment for children across the country.

Today, millions of people in Afghanistan are struggling with food insecurity, poverty, limited access to healthcare, disrupted education, and child protection risks. Women and children are among the most vulnerable, facing increasing challenges to their safety, wellbeing, and future opportunities.

Children in Afghanistan Need Urgent Support

More than 24 million people require humanitarian assistance, and children continue to bear the heaviest burden of the crisis.

Key challenges facing children and families include:

  • Food Insecurity and Hunger: More than half of Afghanistan's population lives below the poverty line, while drought and climate-related shocks have severely impacted food production and livelihoods.
  • Child Protection Risks: Millions of children require life-saving assistance, protection services, and psychosocial support as families struggle to cope with ongoing instability.
  • Displacement and Vulnerability: Years of conflict have forced millions of people from their homes, leaving many families without secure shelter, incomes, or access to essential services.
  • Limited Access to Education and Healthcare: Children face barriers to quality education and healthcare, reducing opportunities for healthy development and a brighter future.

World Vision's Work in Afghanistan

World Vision has been working in Afghanistan since 2001, providing humanitarian aid, emergency relief, child protection, education, healthcare, food assistance, and clean water programmes to support vulnerable children and communities.

Over two decades, our work has evolved from emergency response to long-term community development, helping families build resilience and recover from ongoing crises. Through partnerships with local communities, leaders, and stakeholders, World Vision delivers life-saving support while creating opportunities for sustainable change.

How World Vision Supports Children and Families

Our programmes focus on:

  • Food Security and Nutrition to combat hunger and malnutrition.
  • Child Protection to keep children safe from violence, exploitation, and abuse.
  • Education to ensure children can continue learning and developing essential skills.
  • Healthcare Services that improve maternal, newborn, and child health.
  • Clean Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) to prevent disease and improve wellbeing.
  • Livelihoods and Resilience Building to help families recover and thrive.
