World Vision Zambia launches Media Awards to honour journalists who uplift child voices and WV impact in their stories.
Friday, 6th February 2023, Lusaka, Zambia. World Vision Zambia has announced the hosting of its first Media Recognition Awards under the theme, “reporting stories that transform lives”, which will be presented to individual journalists who have excelled in reporting on stories that are child-focused.
These are journalists that carry out their work to uplift child voices, educate and sensitize the population on fundamental issues that contribute to the denouncement of situations that affect children and vulnerable communities and promote the guarantee of their rights.
“We’re delighted as World Vision Zambia to launch these media recognition awards in Zambia, where we will honour 14 journalists that are committed to promoting the voices of children in their stories and also contributing to increased pressure in the public arena so that decision-makers pay greater attention to emerging issues that affect children and their future,” says World Vision Zambia National director John Hasse.
“As a child-focused organisation that seeks to improve the well-being of children, especially the vulnerable, we take cognisance of the media’s power and influence to help foster change and development in health, education, livelihoods, and environmental protection for the benefit of children,” he says.
The Awards will be given based on World Vision Zambia’s Technical Programme areas of intervention, with each Technical Programme presenting two awards to journalists who have done stories related to the sector with an emphasis on the child’s voice, experience and perspective.
The sectors are:
- Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)
- Reproductive Maternal Newborn Child Adolescent Health and Nutrition(RMNAHN)
- Zambia Reading for Education Development (ZREAD)
- Enhanced Livelihood and Resilience
- Humanitarian Emergency Affairs (HEA)
- Community Engagement and Sponsorship Plan (CESP)
- Child Protection
“Categories for the stories to be considered will be for any piece of media, including broadcast, online, audio, or print done between 1st October 2021 to 31st September 2022,” says Sally Namutowe, Associate Director Local Fundraising and Communications.
“These inaugural awards do not require anyone to submit entries, as World Vision will identify and award the winners based on stories covered between the stated period.”
The winners from each category will walk away with prize money, a trophy and a certificate of recognition. The media recognition awards ceremony will be held on 28th February 2023 at World Vision Zambia National Office in Lusaka.
