WASH and hygiene practices through the eyes of children and community members

Putting the community in the driver’s seat of their own development is what WV Somalia does through its ARP model. The Area Rehabilitation Area (ARP) model puts children and the most vulnerable at the centre and mobilizes communities around achieving the well being of their own children through collaboration with government ministries, local leaders, women’s group, children and youth. The model enhances community capacity to own and manage the development process to achieve sustainable child well being outcomes in their communities. In Baki ARP, Somaliland, WV builds the communities’ resilience through an integration of projects in WASH, health and nutrition and education.

At the Baki MCH (Maternal Child Health), services like OTP (Outpatient Therapeutic Programme), antenatal, post natal care as well as delivery services are offered. Mothers who deliver at the MCH get some food rations as well as other incentives like clothes from GIK. The MCH also provides health education through the community health workers.Community health workers also sensitize the community on the importance of the MCH. In Baki Primary school, children have also been sensitized and they in return, through children’s club teach others on the importance of WASH and hygiene practices.
