"I counted one hundred graves in Wadir village alone. When we asked the locals, an elder told us those graves belong to just four extended families," shared Sarfez, 63, from Kunar.

On 1 September, a 6.0-magnitude earthquake shook eastern Afghanistan, killing at least 1,172 children and orphaning 271 children.

To see the reality on the ground, Ria Mohammad Rehaa, World Vision Afghanistan's Communications Manager, travelled to Noorgul district in Kunar, and to one of the most remote quake-affected areas. The journey took 10 hours by car, followed by four hours on foot.

Alongside World Vision’s local partner Agency for Assistance and Development of Afghanistan (AADA), Rehaa joined mobile health teams racing to save lives in the aftermath of the earthquake.
