World Vision Malawi with support from the NICO Group is delivering emergency food assistance to support households impacted by hunger in Machinga District.

The support from  NICO Group forms part of the Group’s MK400 million pledge towards emergency food assistance made to complement the Government of Malawi's relief efforts and  to help protect households most at risk.

Speaking during the launch of the exercise in Machinga, NICO Life Insurance Company Chief Operating Officer Chimwemwe Kanyenda who represented NICO Group said the support reflects the Group’s belief that business must be anchored in meaningful impact.

“We have supported this initiative because we believe that business success should be measured not only by financial performance but also by the stability and wellbeing of the communities we serve. When families are under pressure, the most response is to step forward quickly, practically and with empathy,” said Kanyenda.

Kanyenda further stated that  NICO Group believes in partnerships with the government, humanitarian organizations and the private sector in times of emergency hence its partnership with World Vision Malawi.

“Our hope is that this intervention does not only provide short-term relief but also reinforces a culture of shared responsibility and resilience that Malawi needs, now and in the future,” said Kanyenda.

Taking his turn, World Vision Malawi Director of Operations Charles Chimombo said the partnership will deliver immediate relief while reinforcing a broader culture of shared responsibility.

“We commend  NICO Group for this timely and impactful support. Working together, we are reaching households that need help most, ensuring assistance is delivered with accountability and respect for community structures,” said Chimombo.

Through the partnership with World Vision Malawi, the initiative will support 6,500 households while benefiting 22,000 people across the Traditional Authorities of Chamba, Ngulumia, Nyumwanyumwa and Liwonde. Each beneficiary household is receiving 50kg bag of maize.

The Government of Malawi declared hunger a state of national disaster which has affected over four million people who are currently struggling to find sufficient food. The hunger situation in Malawi has been exacerbated by long dry spells during the 2024/2025 farming season and the previous growing season, rising food prices, and escalating vulnerability.

Following the disaster declaration, World Vision Malawi begun mobilizing resources from local and international partners to provide life-saving assistance and long-term recovery support, resulting in the partnership with NICO Group.
