Not long ago, daily life in Nsamba Village in Malawi’s Nsanje District began with long and weary walks in search of water.

Buckets in hand, community members followed dusty paths for kilometers, returning home exhausted , sometimes late  and often with just enough water to last the day.

That routine is now a thing of the past. Thanks to the installation of a solar-powered water system and the rehabilitation of broken borehole, clean and reliable water is now close at hand.

For Apatsa,15, the change is deeply personal. Her mornings once started with a long trek that left her with backache before lessons had even begun.

“Most of the time I was too tired and sometimes I even went to school without bathing. Now with the kiosk nearby, I have more time to study and take care of myself,” says Apatsa.

Today, Apatsa fetches water in minutes rather than hours. She arrives at school on time, refreshed and ready to learn.

For mothers like Mary Folopesi, the shift has brought a sense of relief that is hard to put into words. A mother of four, Mary once spent much of her day walking back and forth, balancing heavy buckets on her head.

“Walking long distances with two heavy buckets of water was exhausting. Water consumed so much of my time. Now I can manage my home better and my family is happy,” says Mary.

With water close to home, she now has time to care for her children, prepare meals and focus on her household without the constant pressure of the next trip to the water source.

Another beneficiary, Dorica Tembenu remembers the days when families had to walk nearly four kilometers. For her, the improvement is not just about convenience but about dignity and progress.

“Families were forced to fetch water from faraway villages and this was affecting many marriages because of the distance women had to walk,” says Dorica.

The rehabilitation of an old borehole in the same village  which had been out of service for a month  has further strengthened access to clean water, giving the community reliable alternatives during peak demand.
