For years, the residents of Mundanya Village in Manyinga District faced a harsh reality—children and families risking their lives fetching unsafe water from the crocodile-infested Kabompo River. Safe drinking water was a distant dream, and poor sanitation hindered their health and well-being.

But that story has changed.

On April 25, 2025, a new chapter began for Mundanya, as World Vision Zambia, in partnership with North Western Water Supply and Sanitation Company Limited and Golf Africa, celebrated a significant milestone: the community achieved Open Defecation Free (ODF) status, attained universal water coverage, and inaugurated a state-of-the-art piped water system. This system, with a capacity of 100,000 liters and valued at K4,755,337.37, now provides reliable, safe drinking water to the community.

During the celebration, Ekwase Msoni, World Vision Zambia’s Strategy, Impact, and Learning Director, highlighted the impact of this achievement:

“The 100,000-litre piped water system will serve over 300 households and more than 2,500 people, ensuring access to safely managed drinking water. This is a game-changer for health and livelihood.”

The new infrastructure not only supplies clean water but also promotes improved sanitation, leading to healthier families and a brighter future for Manyinga District. His Royal Highness, Senior Chief Sikufele, expressed heartfelt gratitude: “Water is life. Thanks to World Vision for bringing this vital resource to Mundanya.”

North Western Province’s Provincial Minister, Hon. Robert Lihefu, praised the partnership: “Together, we have transformed the water story from hardship to hope. This project will also boost education and community health.”

The celebration concluded with the awarding of 67 certificates to communities in Kaula, Kawanda, and Kasamba for their progress toward ODF status. Among the recipients were 20 Community Champions, each honored with a Buffalo Bicycle for their leadership in promoting sanitation and hygiene practices.

Today, Mundanya is a community renewed, where access to clean water is paving the way for healthier, more hopeful lives.
