A Gift of a Bicycle motivates volunteers to reach more people

World Vision Zambia recently handed over 87 bicycles, including a tricycle, to dedicated volunteers working across the district. These bicycles are more than just a means of transport; they are tools of transformation.
“Volunteers make a life-changing impact on communities every day,” said Mr. Marc Nosbach, World Vision Zambia National Director. “By equipping them with bicycles, we are strengthening community referral and support systems. This empowers them to promote positive health behaviours, such as early antenatal care, child protection, and timely health-seeking practices.”

For volunteers like Benjamin Banda, the gift of a bicycle is a symbol of trust and a catalyst for deeper commitment.
“This bicycle means I can reach more families, faster,” he said, beaming with pride. “I’m excited to serve my community even better. It’s not just about transport, it’s about saving lives.”
George Lungu, another volunteer, echoed this sentiment.

“Before, I had to walk long distances to visit households. Now, I can cover more ground and help more people. I feel empowered and motivated. This is a big step forward for all of us.”
These bicycles are already making a tangible difference. Volunteers are now able to respond more quickly to health emergencies, follow up on vulnerable children, and ensure that expectant mothers attend their antenatal appointments on time. The ripple effect is profound healthier families, safer children, and stronger communities.
“At the heart of our programming are strong community structures and trusted relationships,” Mr. Nosbach emphasized. “Because real, lasting change begins from within the community.”

Indeed, the transformation in Nyimba is not just about mobility, it’s about momentum. With every turn of the wheel, volunteers are building a healthier, more resilient future for their neighbours. They are the unsung heroes, quietly weaving a safety net of care and compassion across the district.
As the sun sets over Nyimba, the shadows of volunteers on bicycles dot the horizon, a moving testament to what’s possible when communities are empowered from within.
