Lighting the Way: How Solar Power Is Transforming Learning in Rural Zambia

For years, pupils at this school studied without electricity or access to safe water, a challenge reflected across rural Zambia. Only 34% of rural Zambian households have access to electricity, according to the 2023 National Energy Access Survey by ZamStats and the Ministry of Energy, while 63% have access to safe water, according to the 2022 Living Conditions Monitoring Survey by ZamStats.

A new solar microgrid is changing that. Teachers can now print tests, pupils can use the school computers after dark, and exam preparation can continue into the evening.

“Now that we have electricity, our teachers can print our tests. We are thankful for this development,” says Josephine, a pupil at the school.
