In the chilly mornings of Zambia’s cold season, children in rural areas often face a daunting challenge: attending school without the warmth and comfort they need to learn and thrive. At Kafululu Primary School in Chibombo District, this reality was a common struggle for many pupils. Most families in the area rely on subsistence farming, making warm school uniforms a luxury they simply cannot afford.

Fortunately, hope arrived through the generosity of  World Vision Zambia’s Gift-in-Kind programme, supported by World Vision Canada. The distribution of school jerseys has brought more than just warmth; it has ignited a sense of dignity, pride, and renewed motivation among the students.

Twelve-year-old Nchimunya, a bright Grade 7 pupil, vividly recalls her hardships before receiving her jersey.
"Before getting the jersey, I often missed school during the cold season because I only had a shirt to wear," she shared. "On the days I did come, it was hard to concentrate because of the cold. My fingers would go numb, and I couldn’t write properly."

Classrooms at Kafululu lack heating, so the cold can be a major barrier to learning. But since receiving her jersey, Nchimunya’s attendance has improved significantly.
"This jersey has helped me attend all my lessons, and my grades have gotten better," she said with a smile. "Now, I feel confident I can pass my Grade 7 exams."

Naomi, a Grade 6 student, also faced difficulties before her jersey arrived.
"I used to struggle to wake up early because of the cold," she explained. "Now, I go to school every day, and my uniform looks neat and tidy."

The impact of the jerseys extends beyond warmth—they have given the children a boost in self-esteem. Many students said it was the first time they felt proud of their school uniform, inspiring a new sense of belonging and confidence.

Misheck, a Grade 9 pupil, expressed heartfelt gratitude.
"Thank you, World Vision, for supporting us," he said. "This jersey reminds me that someone cares about our education and our future."

As the cold mornings continue, the pupils of Kafululu walk to school a little taller, a little warmer, and a lot more hopeful. Thanks to the compassion and support of partners like World Vision, these children are now equipped not just with jerseys, but with the confidence to dream of a brighter future.
