New Roof for Typhoon Wutip-Affected Families in Quang Tri
World Vision has provided initial assistance to families in Quang Tri after they were affected by Typhoon WUTIP early this week.
In Mrs Xuyen’s memory, powerful wind blew up a roof sheet of her house in Trieu Phong district at 12p.m on September 30. “It fell down in front of me when I was outside the door. I narrowly escaped being injured,” the woman recalled.
The scene was just the beginning that the 46-year-old woman witnessed when Typhoon WUTIP slashed Central Vietnam on that day.
Two hours later after the incident, all roof of her ten-square-meter house flied away, making everything inside soaked.
Fortunately, the single mother and her two daughters sheltered at her parents nearby.
Quang Tri is not on the eye of the typhoon but some local communities were affected. Local statistics showed that 17 houses were ruined and more than 11,000 other houses had a part of their roof blown up.
Mrs Xuyen recalled how her house was damaged by Typhoon Wutip.
Mrs Xuyen and her daughters, one 15 and another 12, keep staying at her parents. Two bags of rice that she just harvested were both drenched at their old house. They are having instant noodles after they received the relief from local authorities.
“I wish a safe house for me and my daughters. However, I haven’t had any plan to repair the roof because I can’t afford the cost,” shared the woman. Being unable to earn from cultivating rice in her small field, Mrs Xuyen works for other people whenever they hire her.
After assessing the damage, World Vision provided Mrs Xuyen and other 10 families with roof sheets on October 3 afternoon in Trieu Phong district. The sheets will also be given to rooms of four kindergartens, in which 871 children are nursed, in the district, and to nearly 70 families in Vinh Linh district.
“We plan to hand out drinking water, mosquito nets and blankets for people in the two districts to ensure necessities to local people,” said World Vision Vietnam’s National Humanitarian and Emergency Affairs Coordinator, Mr Le Van Duong.
