World Vision has begun assisting flood-hit people in the northern mountainous province of Dien Bien and will also send relief items to others in Hai Phong at weekend.

Nearly 230 children and adults in Tuan Giao district in Dien Bien received rice and instant noodles on August 6 after their houses were flooded since earlier this week.

“Everything inside our house was swept away or has been under water. I haven’t seen my roof so far,” says Vu A Lu, a local man living in an affected village in Tuan Giao. “World Vision has given us rice and instant noodles while we stay with my relatives and have nothing to eat.”

After the initial relief response, World Vision staff in the district will work closely with local partners to assess losses, control any emerging infectious diseases, take care of clean water and sanitation, and draft plans on livelihood assistance to the most-affected families.

On August 8, World Vision will provide rice, instant noodles, fish sauce, and soap to 260 local people on Cat Hai island in Hai Phong. One engine-driven rubber life boat and 65 lifejackets will be provided to the local authority so that they can help local residents travel safely and easily during floods.

Floods and landslides caused by unusually heavy rain occurred in several communes and districts where World Vision is working in Dien Bien, Hai Phong and Thanh Hoa. Though it didn’t cause any deaths in this area, it has devastated local cultivation, animal husbandry, and aquaculture.
